Ajloun Nature Reserve
Ajloun Woodland Reserve is located in Ajloun Highlands (13 square km.). It
consists of Mediterranean hill country, dominated by open woodlands of Oak
and Pistachio. The rich greenery of Ajloun has made it a popular spot for
picnickers and hikers.
Staying
overnight:
Ajloun Campsite is on the edge of the forest in the
Ajloun Nature Reserve in the north of Jordan. It occupies a large grassy
clearing, enclosed by oak, pistachio and strawberry trees and offers
beautiful views of the reserve and beyond. There are 10 four- person forest
lodges available with small terraces and beds inside. Nearby shared showers
and toilets are available. The campsite is opened from the 1st of
April until the 31st of October every year.
Other
faculties:
Near the camp is also the reserve's visitors centre,
restaurant and the meeting room. Soon there will be a nature shop selling
items made by the local community.
Exploring the
reserve:
We have two interesting tracks to explore the reserve:
*
Roe Deer Trail: 2km trail, taking 1-2 hours,
leading from the campsite to the summit of a nearby hill overlooking the
reserve. The area surrounding the trail is rich in wildflowers in the
springtime. It's an excellent spot for a picnic. Not far from the campsite
you will find an old stone wine press. The return trip goes past the
breeding enclosures for the roe deer and back to the Visitor's Center.
(guided, open from the 1st of April until the 31st of
October)
*
Rockrose trail: 8km trail, taking 4-5 hours, passing
across heavily wooded valleys and ridges, inside and outside the nature
reserve. This highly scenic trail passes through villages and olive orchards
and offers beautiful panoramic views to the
West
Bank and Syria. There are steep scrambles en-route that demand a reasonable
level of fitness.
(guided, open from the 1st
of April until the 31st of October).
What to wear
and bring:
Wear comfortable warm cloths with comfortable shoes for the hiking. Warm
clothes are needed for the afternoon and early morning.
Also, you might need a torch, towel. (if desired bring you pillow because
some visitors found the pillows in the lodges a bit high)
Food and
beverage in Ajloun:
Our menu is based on the traditional Arabic food which is mainly rice and
meat or chicken. Salads, juice or fruit and water will be provided too.
Please inform us upon booking if you are vegetarian to prepare the meal.
