Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Dana - Feinan Ruins

After an early breakfast and a detailed trip briefing, you will depart for the start of the trek. You will drive south through a diverse desert landscape to the small village of Dana, located within a relatively new 320 km² nature reserve. The reserve features varied environments including plateau, mountain, valley, and desert landscapes. The trek begins from Dana village with a descent along a twisting track to the desert floor (approx. 250m above sea level). Along the way you will pass through different ecosystems with varied flora and fauna, before reaching the campsite on the desert floor near the ruins of Feinan. These include the remains of an ancient Byzantine church dating back to 4000 BC. Night camping. (13km, 7–8 hours trekking)

Day 2: Feinan Ruins - Wadi Araba

After an early start and breakfast, you will load the equipment and begin the day’s trek. Today’s route crosses hamada (stony desert), with jagged mountains rising up to 1400m to the east, while to the west and northwest the open desert descends toward the Dead Sea (400m below sea level). The morning route passes around several small hills, then continues across open desert toward Wadi Barwaz at the foot of the mountains for lunch. A wadi is a dried-up riverbed or water course, common in this landscape. After lunch and a short rest, you will head south-west, gradually descending across hamada and later into a region of small sand dunes in Wadi Araba. Camp again under clear, starry night skies. (18km, 8–9 hours trekking)

Day 3: Wadi Araba - Ras Feid

Today you will leave the sand dune desert behind and return into the mountains. The route begins with a gradual ascent across the desert to Abu Sakakin at the foot of the mountains. From there you will start a steeper ascent over small boulders and rocks to reach a steep and twisty track that climbs high into the mountains, offering a particularly challenging section. This remote region provides spectacular views west into the desert. After a lunch break, continue to the high saddle (720m) with excellent views into the heart of the mountains. The descent to the river valley is steep along small twisty tracks. Once on the valley floor, you will walk through the beautiful Sakakin canyon before camping above the river at Ras Feid. Night camping. (14km, 8–9 hours trekking)

Day 4: Ras Feid - Shkaret Msei'd

You will leave camp and enjoy a pleasant walk back through the Sakakin canyon to a large clump of reeds. From there the track becomes tougher as you gradually climb back into higher regions used by Bedouins in summer. The views of surrounding mountains and the desert below are outstanding. Expect steep climbs and rocky descents, with superb rewards throughout. Eventually you will reach a pass with tremendous views across the mountain range and desert beyond, and toward your destination, Shkaret Msei'd. You will descend to the river valley and continue along the valley floor to Shkaret Msei'd, where you will camp. This is a tough day in challenging terrain. Night camping. (8–9 hours walking)

Day 5: Shkaret Msei'd - Little Petra - Campsite

After a good night’s sleep and hearty breakfast, you will head inland toward the ancient site of Little Petra. The route follows an undulating track through low hills and a couple of small settlements before arriving among rock-hewn temples and unusual sandstone formations. These ruins are among the oldest in the Middle East, dating back around 9000 years. After touring Little Petra, you will continue weaving through valleys to your campsite set among the rock formations. (8 hours walking)

Day 6: Petra

Today is the trek into Petra. The huge tombs and buildings carved into the rock are a testament to the wealth of the ancient Nabataean capital. The trek begins at the Monastery, an impressive carved structure standing 43m high and 50m wide. From there, continue on a guided trek to the center of Petra, then around Jebel al-Khubtha and the red-striped sandstone rocks to Wadi Mataha. You will then walk through the As-Siq to see the Treasury, Petra’s most famous and impressive sight. Afterward, a further half-hour walk back through the Siq will take you to your waiting transport for transfer to your hotel.

Day 7: Petra / Wadi Rum

In the morning, depart from your hotel at a time of your choice. Start with a private jeep safari (about 1.5 hours, possibly less) and drive to Wadi Rum. You will pass the Seven Pillars of Wisdom, described by Lawrence of Arabia. The guided jeep tour will include Lawrence of Arabia’s house and Thamudic and Nabataean inscriptions made centuries ago. You may also climb one of the natural rock bridges (optional camel ride available). In the evening, stay in nomadic tents in the middle of the desert to experience Bedouin life, enjoy a Bedouin BBQ dinner, and sleep overnight in Bedouin tents.

Day 8: Wadi Rum / Aqaba (Water Activities)

In the morning, travel to Aqaba and transfer directly to your hotel. Enjoy a free afternoon in Aqaba and overnight. Aqaba is a coastal town in the far south of Jordan and the capital of Aqaba Governorate. It is Jordan’s only seaport and borders Eilat, Israel, with a border post allowing crossing between the two countries. Located at the head of the Gulf of Aqaba, the town is best known as a diving and beach resort, while industrial activity also remains important, including exports of phosphate and some shells.
